What Can I Do?

It’s sure nice to hear that at a meeting: What can I do to help the Branch?

Some of us have been on the Board for several years. Check the list in the latest issue of The Ottawa Genealogist to see what positions are vacant. If you don’t think you are ready, the current Board would be happy to spend the next year training replacements. Most of these jobs require only a couple of hours each week and I am sure that most of us could afford to skip a couple of TV shows. The descriptions of the Board positions are at Job Descriptions.

Not ready to contribute to running the Branch? There are other smaller tasks to be done. How about bringing the juice and cookies to the monthly meeting? Show up half an hour early to start the coffee pot brewing? Welcome new members at meetings? Spend a couple of hours in the City Archives helping researchers? Help give a course or introduction to new genealogists? Work on the Facebook or Blog? Tell your story in The Ottawa Genealogist or at a branch meeting? How about indexing some of our holdings for The Ontario Name Index? Help with a library project? There are many ways that you can contribute to the Branch. Let us know what you can do to help.

It is your Branch and every one of you is responsible for its future. Working together we can make the Branch better and help our hobby.

    • Our current indexing project involves the family histories in our Branch Library and including names in the Society’s TONI (The Ontario Name Index) database. Since we are not a lending library, this work needs to be done on site in the City of Ottawa Archives. The actual task means recording the full name of everybody in the family history along with the pages where they are found. The information is saved in a spreadsheet, usually MS Excel but other formats may work as well. You would be assigned a family history and when completed, you e-mail it to the TONI Coord.

The Society has other indexing projects for TONI which may be done remotely. We most need volunteers to work on the Leeds & Grenville newspaper collection which has been scanned but now needs to be indexed to make it more useful. Since the images are on line, this project can be done from home.
