Library Volunteers Schedule
Provincial Requirements for Volunteer Training:
The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 requires that all organizations in Ontario, including not-for-profits such as OGS and its branches; the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa; and the Sir Guy Carleton Branch, United Empire Loyalists of Canada, must be in compliance with the Act and its regulations. The purpose of this legislation is to ensure that all Ontarians, no matter what their level of ability, are able to receive goods and services in a manner that respects their dignity and independence.
If you are a volunteer with one of the libraries mentioned above and have not already done so, please complete one of the following on-line training modules. You can use the training module provided by OGS or follow this link to the one taken by the City of Ottawa Archives staff. This is a necessary part of our training whether you are a member of one of our organizations or not.
I am required to maintain a record of who has completed the training, which course they took, and when it was completed. Please contact me at [email protected] when you have completed the training.
This training deals only with customer service; it has nothing to do with physical accessibility to the building itself. This is covered under other legislation and is not a requirement for our volunteers.
Final Notes
As you work through the related material, much of it will seem like common sense and will reflect your usual practice in working with patrons – whether or not they have a disability. We trust that by working through these ideas together you will strengthen the meaning of the phrase: “How can I help?” so that the speaker is prepared to respond to the needs of any individual.
