Mary was born Sept. 20, 1936, in Fayette County to John and Hattie (Stevens) Smock. She lived most of her early years around the Fayette and Wadena areas. Mary graduated from Wadena High School in 1955. In July of 1957, Mary was united in marriage to William Benner. The couple divorced in 1972. She worked for 18 years at the University Inn in Cedar Falls, and at the time of her retirement in October of 1996, she was in charge of housekeeping. Mary enjoyed camping, watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball, NASCAR racing and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Survivors include one son, Scott and wife Pamela of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Lisa Jacobsen and husband Daniel of Grundy Center and Tina Sheridan and husband Jeffrey of Alden; one sister, two brothers, five grandchildren, including Justin and Allison Sheridan of Alden; and special friend, Richard Brandenburg.
