Henry Edward Billings1,2,3
M, b. 14 May 1863, d. after 6 December 1934
- Relationship
- 6th great-grandson of Roger Billings
Henry Edward Billings was born on 14 May 1863 at Trois Rivieres, Canada East (now Québec), Canada.4,1,5 He was the son of Henri Billings and Marguerite Demers.5,1 Henry Edward Billings was listed in the household of Henri Billings in the 1871 Canadian Census for Granby, Shefford County, Québec, Canada.6 Henry Edward Billings was Catholic with Henri Billings and Marguerite Billings on 2 April 1871 at Granby, Shefford County, Québec, Canada.6 Henry Edward Billings was named the godfather at Félix Ernest Billings's baptism on 14 January 1884 at Notre Dame de Granby Church, Granby, Shefford County, Canada East (now Québec), Canada.7 Henry Edward Billings immigrated to Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, USA, in 1887.3 He may have been the Henry Billings who witnessed the marriage of Adelard Lachapelle and Emma Billings on 6 August 1889 at Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, USA.8,9,10 Henry Edward Billings and Mary Waldroff obtained a marriage license on 10 January 1891.5 Henry Edward Billings was a cabinet maker at Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, USA, on 13 January 1891.5 He married Mary Waldroff on 13 January 1891 at Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, USA.5,11 Henry Edward Billings was an undertaker at Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, USA, on 2 June 1892.12 He and Mary Waldroff immigrated to Canada in 1896.13 Henry Edward Billings witnessed the marriage of Onésime James Billings and Donalda Robitaille on 25 October 1898 at Notre Dame de Granby Church, Granby, Shefford County, Québec, Canada.14,15,16 Henry Edward Billings was listed as a pensionnaire [boarder] with the household of Marie Guilmette in the 1901 Canadian Census for Granby, Shefford County, Québec, Canada.17 Henry Edward Billings was a marchant malle [trunk merchant?] at Granby, Shefford County, Québec, Canada, on 31 March 1901.2 He and Mary Waldroff were Roman Catholic on 31 March 1901.17 Henry Edward Billings witnessed the baptism of Marie Olive Billings on 2 August 1903 at Notre Dame de Granby Church, Granby, Shefford County, Québec, Canada.18 Henry Edward Billings immigrated to 3158 North Clarke St, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA, on 1 May 1919.19 He was a carpenter on 1 May 1919.19 He may be the married man who was listed as a roomer with the household of Tillie La Parle in the 1920 US Federal Census for 3158 Clark St, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.20 Henry Edward Billings died after 6 December 1934 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.3 He "By his own account born in Three Rivers, Canada, Henry moved with his parents to Manistique, Michigan in 1887 at the age of twenty-three. The family remained there until 1894 or early 1895, when they returned to Granby, Québec. Henry rented at a few different homes in Granby with his wife and daughter, where he worked as a laborer, renting at the home of Louis Pare on Albert St. (1896), and later as a cabinet maker, renting at 221 Main St. (1902). The 1901 census of Granby, Québec gives his date of birth as May 14, 1863, but 1864 is a better fit given the regular two-year intervals between the births of his siblings.
Henry left Canada with his wife and children between 1903 and 1908 and moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he lived off and on for the next several years. He was reported living in Chicago in his father's 1908 obituary. In 1914, Henry was living in Pigeon Hill, Québec, per an immigration record of his mother that names him as "Edouard Belisle."
Henry was recorded leaving Canada via the St. Albans port on May 1, 1919 bound for 3158 North Clarke Street, Chicago, Illinois (Henry worked there as a contractor and lived at a boarding house). He was carrying $25. His last permanent residence was recorded as St-Therese-de-Blainville with his mother, whom he reported as being his nearest living relative. He reported being in the United States previously, from 1887 to 1919 in Illinois, and journeyed back to Canada to escort his aging mother across the border. His brother, James was recorded crossing the border into Vermont from Canada only the previous day, apparently after a final visit with his mother, who was moving to Michigan. Henry reported that he was married, but the fact that he was living in a boarding house suggests his marriage had at least informally ended before this point. The immigration record gave a physical description of the unusually diminutive man: Henry was described as fifty-four years old, dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes, and standing only 5'3".
Henry was a contractor, living a bachelor life from at least 1919 in a rented room owned by Tillie LaParle. No wife or children were recorded with him in the 1920 census, and he reported himself a widower. Per the 1923 Chicago city directory, a "Harry Billings" rented a room at 3158 N. Clarke, which was the address of the Lakeview Bachelor Apartments, an apartment building above a bank that The Economist reported on Aug. 21, 1915 was leased and renovated by the same Tillie LaParle. Henry may have changed his name or it could have been misprinted, but it’s clearly the same man.
Henry seems to have had the same experience as his brother George-- he self-reports being married in 1919, but less than a year later claims to be a widower living in a boarding house, his two young daughters nowhere to be found. Henry may have taken to drinking like George and had his wife leave him and take their children. He is last mentioned in the Dec. 6, 1934 edition of the Escanaba Daily Press newspaper as having visited with his sister and friends in Manistique. There appears to be no record of his death or burial in Illinois, and his fate remains a mystery.
I had a researcher look up Henry in an index of all Catholic burials in Chicago, IL-- Henry was nowhere to be found, though she did find Anthony & wife Goldie. Henry may have ended up with relatives in Michigan in his old age, or may have lived with his son. There is a Henry Billings found in the 1930 census in Spencer, Indiana who was born in 1863, but not him. There is a Henry Billings (May 12, 1864 - Nov. 16, 1927) buried in Lakewood, WA who is also not him (checked in WA archives). Searched both Chicago city and Cook Co., IL, no record of his death. He could have also ended up with his daughter Irene in Milwaukee, WI."3
